Set limits. Children need limits to grow happy and healthy.
For the little ones
Young children need parents who are able to enjoy their winsome cuteness while also preparing them to face the challenges of life. Children do not have the wisdom or discernment they need to make the best choices to help them grow healthy and strong. Often what is best for them is not what they want. How can you help?
First, make a schedule for meal times, sleep times, and technology time. Train your child to follow the schedule and be accountable for doing so.
Second, offer a daily breakfast and nutritious meals. Children also need to spend time outdoors and get plenty of sleep (more than you think) in order to come to school ready for learning the next day.
Third, convert things that they don’t like doing or trying – into fun, emotionally stimulating games. Be creative; there are lots of ideas on the internet!
For older children
Older children also need limits, but their needs change. Parents should help their children develop discernment on media content and choices for entertainment, including movies, TV shows and music. Older children need to begin to experience freedoms and consequences for their own decisions and mistakes. For example:
First, consider having a required wake up time, rather than a go-to-bed time. If they are not able to get up on time, then they must go to bed at a parent established time until they demonstrate that they can manage their own schedule better.
Second, consider giving your older children a weekly allowance. Be generous but expect them to pay for their own clothes or snacks or entertainment. This helps them learn to manage their money under the supervision of their parents.
Whether with younger children or older children – It is very important to be CONSISTENT. This will be hard at first, but absolutely essential if you want to gain any ground.
