Three Year Olds

Cognitive

  • understands concept of same and different
  • makes connections between new and previous experiences
  • sorts hard/soft, large/small, etc.

Communication – Language and Literacy

  • holds books in correct orientation
  • recognizes print in their environment
  • uses and understands gestures to communicate
  • Able to ask for help in English
  • understands conversation and simple stories in English with visuals
  • communicates needs and desires using English vocabulary
  • speaks in phrases

Math & Science

  • understands concepts of time such as day and night
  • distinguishes between one and many
  • recognizes and produces patterns (in colors, shape or size)
  • matches geometric shapes in environment
  • names and describes things observed

Spiritual

  • knows that God made them and loves them
  • distinguishes the Bible from other books
  • practices kindness and helpfulness
  • enjoys Bible stories and songs
  • memorizes modified Bible verses of 3 words

Social & Emotional

  • Role plays mom or dad
  • begins to distinguish between real and pretend
  • understands concept of taking turns
  • understands behaviors are linked to consequences (either positive or negative)

Physical & Motor Development

  • walks and runs well
  • jumps up and down in place
  • rides a tricycle/ riding toys
  • dresses and undresses self (may need help with small buttons and zippers)
  • builds towers with blocks
  • knows how to use scissors
  • able to trace shapes

Four Year Olds

Cognitive

  • understands differences and similarities
  • sorts objects according to characteristics
  • experiments with objects (What will happen if….?)
  • can predict outcomes based on previous experiences
  • recognizes cause and effect

Communication – Language and Literacy

  • uses new English words in play
  • listens to teacher without interruption
  • recognizes that print moves from left to right and top to bottom
  • follows two part directions in English
  • shares personal experiences in English
  • speaks in simple sentences in English

Spiritual

  • knows that God made them unique
  • knows that Jesus is God’s son
  • begins to practice self-control
  • creates artistic representations of Bible stories
  • memorizes Bible verses of 4 – 6 words

Math & Science

  • understands concepts of days and seasons
  • can count to 5
  • can put objects in groups of 1 to 5
  • uses concepts such as height, size and length to compare objects
  • classifies objects according to more than one characteristic
  • recognizes and creates patterns (in colors, shape or size)

Social & Emotional

  • role plays community helpers (baker, doctor, bus driver, etc.)
  • begins to take responsibility for own actions
  • understands and accepts limits and routines
  • reacts to normal frustrations in constructive ways
  • able to wait for their turn in activities

Physical & Motor Development

  • can walk backwards
  • jumps in place and forward
  • climbs ladders and playground equipment
  • cuts straight lines with scissors
  • able to draw person with 3 to 6 body parts
  • able to draw circles, triangles, rectangles
